Emma Woodhouse - [Female: Age 20-30] Very pretty, accomplished, willful, highly intelligent, sophisticated, and arrogant. Although she is often wrong, she is confident of being right. A clever and spoiled young woman with a strong affection for her father.

Miss Taylor - [Female: Age 30+] Emma’s former governess and new wife of Mr. Weston. Mature for her age and understanding.

Harriet Smith - [Female: Age 20-35] A soft, docile, amiable and adoring orphan. She is easily swayed and is of a class below Emma’s, she is frequently caught up in Emma’s schemes. Befriended by Emma, she eventually decides to marry the man for whom she was intended.

Miss Bates - [Female: Age 35+] A middle-aged spinster, kind but terribly talkative. Lives in genteel poverty with her ailing mother. A gossip.

Jane Fairfax - [Female: Age 18-30] A beautiful and talented young woman who is visiting her aunt - Miss Bates- in Highberry.

Augusta Hawkins- [Female: Age 20-35] The vain, nouveau-riche wife of Mr. Elton. Materialistic and a snob.

Henry Woodhouse - [Male: Age 50+] Emma’s father. An expert worrier whose hypochondria is a source of continual amusement, he basks in Emma’s attentions and resists and kind of change. Although he indulges his whims, he also expresses concerns for the health of others.

Mr. George Knightley - [Male: Age 20-30]A close friend of the Woodhouse family. A Handsome, virile, rational gentleman farmer with great judgement and tact, who acts an adviser to – and finally lover of– Emma. A man’s man.

Mr. Weston - [Male: Age 35+] A kindly cheerful neighbor of the Woodhouses, and the father of Frank Churchill by an earlier marriage. Genial, generous, easy-going, and warm-hearted.

Philip Elton - [Male: Age 20-35] The rector of Highberry, who is looking for the right marriage. Immature at times and overeager.

Robert Martin - [Male: Age 20-35] A capable young farmer who is head over heels in love with Harriet Smith.

Frank Churchill - [Male: Age 18-30] The very handsome and well-mannered son of Mr. Weston, who was raised by his aunt and is visiting Highberry for the first time.

The Story:
Pledging never to marry, Emma is nevertheless the “matchmaker of Highbury.” Her newest project, Harriet, has already received a proposal, but Emma insists she marry the eligible vicar, while an old family friend warns her to give up matchmaking. When Emma discovers the vicar is more interested in her, she is forced to find another suitor for Harriet.
